Saving live music venues is important because they support artists, culture, and local communities. They give new musicians a place to grow, bring people together through shared experiences, and keep music diverse and creative. Live venues also support local economies and offer unique, emotional experiences that can’t be replaced online, making them vital spaces worth protecting.

In recent years, local live music venues - especially grassroots ones in the UK - have been closing at worrying rates: in 2023, about 125 venues either shut or stopped hosting live music, equivalent to roughly 16% of the grassroots sector, averaging around two closures per week. While the rate slowed a bit in 2024, with about 46 closures, the overall number of venues remains significantly lower than before the pandemic. This decline has wiped out jobs, events, and performance opportunities, with around 15% fewer grassroots spaces operating by early 2025 compared to pre‑pandemic levels.
